Cumberland juniors Praise Idamadudu and Daveina Watson were named Mid-South Conference Women’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week, announced by the league office Monday.
Idamadudu earned the Track Athlete of the Week honor after winning the 200 meter event at the Don McGarey Invitational at Kennesaw State. Idamadudu won the event with not just the fastest time at the meet, but also the fastest-time in the NAIA this outdoor season at 24.08 seconds.
This is the first outdoor honor Idamadudu has earned this season and the seventh of her career.
Watson was named the Mid-South Conference Field Athlete of the Week. Watson also won the shot put at the Don McGarey Invitational. She smashed the current top mark in the NAIA this season measuring at 15.22 meters. The previous top mark was 13.98 meters.
This also is the first weekly honor for Watson of the outdoor season and her third of her career.
Phoenix women set four top 4 NAIA marks on final day of Don McGarey InvitationalKENNESAW, Ga. — Cumberland’s Mercy Kibiwott, Daveina Watson, Blessing Samuel and the 4x400 meter relay team secured top 4 NAIA marks to finish out the Don McGarey Invitational last weekend.
Starting with the track portion, Mercy Kibiwott clocked in with a time of 37:02.74 in the 10000 meter to finish in second place. The time is the second best in the NAIA this season and hits NAIA standards to qualify her for nationals.
Davina Watson shattered the current NAIA top mark in the shot put. Coming into today, the best mark of the season was 13.98 meters. Watson crushed it with a 15.22 meters mark to claim first place in the event and the new best mark of the outdoor season and A standards.
Blessing Samuel finished in fifth place in the triple jump, but measured at 11.87 meters. The mark is the fourth best in the NAIA and also meets A standards.
The 4x400m relay team of Praise Idamadudu, Leesa Mutandwa, Ezthia Maycock, and Ifunanya Muoghalu took second place in the event and also the new second place time in the NAIA this year. The team ran the relay in 3:47.07 to qualify for nationals with A standards.
Maycock and Mutandwa also ran the 400 meter today finishing in 10th and 12th respectively. Maycock clocked in at 1:01.22 and Mutandwa at 1:01.30.
Five Phoenix ran in the 800 meter paced by Sharon Jerop in 15th place with a time of 2:26.23.
The Phoenix will be back on the track this coming Friday and Saturday at the UAB Spring Invite in Birmingham, Ala.
Men earn nine top 10sKENNESAW, Ga. — Cumberland’s men picked up nine top-10 finishes on the second day of the Dan McGarey Invitational hosted by Kennesaw State University last Saturday.
Lyndon Johnson took second place in the 100-meter run. Johnson posted a time of 10.99 seconds. Kier Priest finished in 23rd and Damiah Smith was 24th.
In the 110m hurdles, Shawn Kaysidzira finished in fourth and Dinkon Sinisterra was sixth with times of 15.62 and 16.32 seconds.
The Phoenix had two top 10 finishes in the 400 meter. Benjamin Nyakudya took fourth place with a time of 48.82 seconds and Joel Forbes finished in ninth at 49.62 seconds.
Edwin Kigen won the 10k with the time of 35:27.93 as the only event winner for Cumberland.
The field events were highlighted by Liyu Scarlassara with a third place finish in the high jump. He posted a mark of 1.98 meters.
Sinisterra and Scarlassara finished 17th and 18th in the long jump. Sinisterra also took 18th in the shot put.
Ahmed Demerdash took 10th in the triple jump at 13.67 meters. Scarlassara was right behind him in 11th.
The 4 x 100 m relay team finished in sixth place posting a time of 42.19 seconds
The Phoenix will be back in action Friday and Saturday at the UAB spring invite in Birmingham Ala..
