Red Boiling Springs Junior and High School Assistant Head Football Coach Kevin Reynolds, who was in charge of strength and conditioning as well as offensive and defensive lines, has chosen to part ways with the football program.
“On Monday, March 18, I was riding in to school and Coach (Jeffrey) Link contacted me and told me to meet with him when I got to school,” said Reynolds. “So, I went ahead and called him. When he picked up I asked him what he needed, and he mentioned a situation where I had fussed at the players quite a bit over halfway doing things in the weight room. He said we need to not be as aggressive towards them coaching wise during the off season.”
Reynolds says that he had been unhappy with the program for months.
“Ever since the end of the season, I’ve been unhappy,” said Reynolds. “After Link telling me what he did that morning over the phone, he asked me if I wanted to come back next season. I told him that I couldn’t see myself coaching next year. I just don’t have it in me, and my heart isn’t in it anymore. I have no intentions of coming back next year.”
Reynolds explains that a factor with the end of last season was that many senior players were going to quit the team.
“Coach Link laid that on me,” said Reynolds. “He stated that it was all because of me why those seniors wanted to quit. He claimed that I had been too hard on them and fussed on them too much. Link fussed on them boys as much or even more than I ever did. Everything I do as a coach, I learned from him. My coaching style is modeled after him. It doesn’t make sense that if he thought that I was being to hard on them, why didn’t he ever say anything?
“All of a sudden, everything was my fault,” said Reynolds. “It all came down on me. So on the 18th I told him that yes, I’m done. I won’t be coming back, and I’m resigning.”
Reynolds says that he had already talked to RBS High School Principal Don Jones the week before about the matter.
“I told him that I was miserable coaching, and that I’ve been that way for a few months. I said I’m practically living here, and Coach Link is very hard to work with,” Reynolds said. “I’ve worked with him for 10 years now, and I’ve just had enough. I’ve been undermined, the scapegoat, and I’m really fed up with it. For a few years I did get a 15-minute break in the mornings, and now I only get two of those a week.”
Reynolds says Jones later spoke with Link about the matter.
“Mr. Jones came to my room while I was having planning period, and I was grading papers and those sorts of things,” said Reynolds. “He informed me that he talked with Coach Link and Link had told him that I wasn’t coaching anymore. I told him that was true. He then told me that he understood why, and that it was fine but as far as class goes that he wouldn’t be able to bring me back next year due to the class being part of the assistant football coach’s job.
“I just told him that it was impossible to make Link happy, and nothing you do is good enough for him,” said Reynolds. “He would get mad over the littlest of things, treated me like a buffoon, and that’s just the way he is. It’s difficult to do anything right in his eyes.”
Reynolds disputed that he had been fired instead of him resigning.
“I was fed up,” said Reynolds. “I don’t like being lied on, if I had been fired, I would have been honest and said so. I was never given an ultimatum, I was not fired, I was never told to resign or else, none of those things. There was no mutual agreement with anyone. It was my decision to quit coaching. I let that be known verbally to both Mr. Jones and to Link.”
Reynolds says he is hopeful for the future, and has had people contact him regarding a job. He will finish out the year at Red Boiling Springs, without any coaching duties.
