The Macon County Highway Department, which has been dealing with leaking roofs throughout its facility for years, will finally get much needed repairs. On April 15, the county commission voted unanimously to assist with funding for the Highway Department to be able to get the needed work done.
“We have some funds that if the Highway Department can come up with the balance, we can come up with $100,000,†said County Mayor Steve Jones. “The repairs are going to run 111,000 and some odd dollars, and the road supervisor has looked at his funds and says he can come up with the balance.â€
Jones said the county has some ADA funds that haven’t been assigned to anything this year and are sitting in capital projects.
“We have about $180,000 in there that we can get the $100,000 from,†said Jones. “This is something that has to be done. The building is going to rot away from all the water damage if we don’t do something to fix it soon.â€
Macon County Road Supervisor Audie Cook says that the repairs have been needed for a very long time.
“It was leaking when I started here,†he said. “When it rains, it will even follow the light switch conduit and pour into the switch. There is new metal in the shop area, we put that up to keep stuff from falling on us. You can stand anywhere in the big building and look up and see holes. That part of the building has holes throughout the entire place.â€
Some of the opaque panels are missing chunks, which allows for rain and snow to come in even more than the smaller holes allow. He said this causes the facility to become virtually useless in inclement weather.
“I never wanted to use money to fix the buildings when we had so much road work that needed those funds,†Cook said. “It is just so bad now that it has to be done.â€
Larry Clark won the bid for doing the repairs, and work is set to begin soon.
