The Mt. Juliet City Commission has greenlit a parks and recreation project on Clemmons Road, passing a resolution during its meeting Monday night.
The city has a wishlist as to what they want for the empty plot of land on Clemmons Road, which includes meeting the needs for a gymnasium, pools, tennis courts and volleyball courts. Currently, the city is looking into a 50,000-square-foot building and two Olympic-sized pools: one indoor and one outdoor.
The resolution details that one of these swimming pools would be used exclusively for school aquatic activities and senior lifestyle activities.
In an announcement released by the city, District 1 City Commissioner Ray Justice shared that he’d been working on finding a way to bring an additional park and aquatic center to the location.
The resolution was co-sponsored by the entire city commission and was passed unanimously by the commissioners present, as District 2 City Commissioner and Vice Mayor Bill Trivett was absent.
“What we’re going to do now is the process of designing, find out community input using the Parks Board Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee, the City Commission, residents and business owners in Mount Juliet,†Justice said. “We’re going to let them tell us what they want at this location.â€
As a part of the research process, a committee will be established to identify community needs that can be met in the complex. T
he committee will consist of a city commissioner, a member of the parks and greenways board, a member of the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee, an individual from the Mt. Juliet Chamber of commerce, two business owners and three residents.
The resolution passed on Monday allows for a budget of $11 million, which will be paid for with revenue from the city’s hotel-motel taxes.
“We’re fortunate that ... the number of residents and our tax base is to the point where we can actually build something very nice here and it will not cost the residents and taxpayers anything,†Justice said.
Mt. Juliet Parks Director Rocky Lee said in the announcement that a public pool has been something that residents have been asking for.
“To me, there’s not a bigger thing that’s happened in Mount Juliet since we’ve been incorporated,†Lee said.
According to Justice, Civil Site Design Group, Anderson Architects and Phoenix Builders have said they will help with the initial layout and donate their services toward that leg of the project.
“That just shows you what a big project it is,†Lee said. “You’ve got your businessmen out here in the community offering to give you some free services to help.â€
